Russians Inspect Missile Defense Base in California
Russian
officials this week carried out a secret inspection of the U.S.
strategic missile defense base in California as part of the New START
arms treaty, according to Obama administration officials.

The inspection of five missile defense interceptors is the only one
allowed under the 2010 arms accord. The treaty requires cuts of U.S. and
Russian deployed strategic warheads to 1,550. 

 
NM Supreme Court Finds Refusing to Photograph Gay Wedding Illegal
The
New Mexico Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that, by refusing to
photograph a gay wedding, a photography studio violated the New Mexico
Human Rights Act (NMHRA).

The court found that Elane Photography’s refusal to serve Vanessa
Willock violated the act, which “prohibits a public accommodation from
refusing to offer its services to a person based on that person’s sexual
orientation,” according to the ruling.   

Report: Syrian rebel forces trained by West are moving towards Damascus
Guerrilla
fighters trained by the West began moving towards Damascus in
mid-August, French newspaper Le Figaro reported on Thursday.

Le Figaro reported that this is the reason behind the Assad regime’s
alleged chemical weapons attack in Damascus on Wednesday morning, as UN
inspectors were allowed into the country to investigate allegations of
WMD use.  

Lebanon: Two blasts rock city of Tripoli
Two explosions have rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, with reports of casualties.

At least one of the blasts happened near al-Taqwa Mosque, as Friday prayers were ending, initial reports say.

Emergency services have rushed to the scenes of the blasts which have left thick plumes of black smoke over the area.

  
Sudan deadly floods affect 300,000 people – WHO
More
than 300,000 people across Sudan have been affected by floods that have
killed nearly 50 people in August, the World Health Organization has
said.

It said the region around the capital Khartoum had been particularly
badly hit and was experiencing the worst floods in 25 years.

One of the major risks to health was the collapse of more than 53,000
latrines, the WHO added.

  
Wildfire near Yosemite park sends tourists fleeing
A
huge wildfire near Yosemite National Park in California has forced
scores of tourists to flee during peak season and is threatening
thousands of homes.

The week-old Rim Fire more than tripled in size on Thursday and now
spans at least 84 square miles (217 sq km).

More than 1,300 firefighters have been tackling the blaze in difficult
terrain but have contained only 1% of it. 

 
Putin warns Ukraine against EU pact
Russian
President Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine he will take “protective
measures” if it signs an EU free trade pact.

…he said: “If our neighbours opt to significantly liberalise customs
rules with the European Union, the Ukrainian market will inevitably be
flooded with high quality goods … and Ukrainian goods will be forced out
of the Ukrainian market.”   

PM: Iran watching carefully how world responds to Syrian chemical weapons atrocities
Iran
is using Syria as a testing ground and carefully watching how the world
responds to Damascus’s use of chemical weapons against its own people,
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Thursday.

This was Netanyahu’s first public comment on reports of the massacre on
Wednesday of hundreds of Syrian civilians by President Bashar Assad’s
forces, using chemical weapons.
