North Korea on Tuesday rejected a UN Security Council resolution imposing tougher sanctions and said the United States would soon face the “greatest pain” it had ever experienced.

World stocks build on record highs as Irma weakens
World stocks climbed to record highs on Tuesday as an easing in tensions over North Korea and signs that Hurricane Irma was causing less damage than feared in the United States boosted risk appetite.

Hurricane Irma: Florida residents warned to beware alligators, snakes
Florida’s Department of Health has warned residents to beware of alligators and snakes displaced by Hurricane Irma. “After storms, be alert to wildlife-snakes, alligators, etc. may have been displaced as a result of strong winds or rain,” the Department tweeted Monday.

9/11 now a time to repent
September 11 is no longer just a day for remembrance. It’s a day for repentance. President Donald Trump, responding to a petition from the Christian group “In God We Trust,” recently declared Friday, September 8, through Sunday, September 10, as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance.

In the event of another war with Hezbollah the IDF’s objective would be to occupy parts of southern Lebanon where the group has support and infrastructure, in order to force a UN resolution favorable to improving the security situation on Israel’s northern border, a senior IDF officer said on Monday.

Ahead of the mass exodus of Israelis looking to exploit remaining days of annual leave during the upcoming High Holidays, the Israeli National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Bureau has issued a number of travel warnings for Israelis seeking to travel abroad. The travel warnings are based on the real likelihood of threats against Israeli and Jewish targets across the world…Most of the travel warnings relate to Arab and “enemy” countries.

IS attack on Sinai convoy ‘kills 18 Egyptian police’
At least 18 policemen have been killed in an attack on a convoy in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula claimed by so-called Islamic State, security sources say. Militants detonated a roadside bomb near the town of el-Arish, reportedly destroying three armoured vehicles and a fourth with signal-jamming equipment. They then opened fire with machine guns at survivors of the blast.

North Korea slapped with UN sanctions after nuclear test
The United Nations has imposed a fresh round of sanctions on North Korea after its sixth and largest nuclear test. The measures restrict oil imports and ban textile exports – an attempt to starve the North of fuel and income for its weapons programmes. The US had originally proposed harsher sanctions including a total ban on oil imports.

Turkey signs deal to get Russian S-400 air defence missiles
Turkey has signed a controversial deal with Russia to arm its forces with Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missiles. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara had already paid the deposit on the deal, estimated to be worth $2.5bn (£1.9bn). Turkey has the second-largest army in Nato. Alliance members are urged to buy compatible weapons systems.

Brexit: EU repeal bill wins first Commons vote
The government’s bid to extract the UK from EU law in time for Brexit has passed its first parliamentary test. MPs backed the EU Withdrawal Bill by 326 votes to 290 despite critics warning that it represented a “power grab” by ministers. The bill, which will end the supremacy of EU law in the UK, now moves onto its next parliamentary stage.

Iraq holds 1,300 foreign wives and children of IS suspects
The Iraqi authorities are holding more than 1,300 foreign family members of suspected Islamic State militants at a displaced people’s camp south of Mosul, officials and aid workers say. The women and children, from at least 13 countries, mostly fled Tal Afar as troops recaptured the city last month. The Norwegian Refugee Council, which is providing assistance at the camp, said they were in “de-facto detention”.

Hurricane Irma: Florida to re-open storm-ravaged Keys
Parts of the Florida Keys, the low-lying islands which bore the brunt of Hurricane Irma when the category-four storm struck on Sunday, are to re-open. Entry is being restricted to residents and business owners as work continues to clear roads and check the state of bridges linking the islands. Some 60% of homes in the state are still without power.

Britain and France have both sent extra police resources and the Netherlands have dispatched troops to the region amid reports of lawlessness in the wake of the devastating 185mph storm.

Hamas ready to reconcile with Fatah with no conditions
Ismail Haniyeh, political chief of Hamas, said the organization is ready to talk reconciliation with the rival government of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas without preconditions. Hamas had previously demanded that Abbas halt a series of measures taken against the Islamic militant group before sitting down to discuss a reconciliation deal.

Venezuela Supreme Court has staged effective coup: jurists’ group
Venezuela’s Supreme Court has progressively dismantled the rule of law, becoming an instrument of President Nicolas Maduro’s government in what amounts to a coup against the constitutional order, an international human rights group charged on Tuesday. The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said the top court had undermined human rights and infringed the Constitution through a series of rulings since December 2015.
