Trump and North Korea war of words escalates
US President Donald Trump has made new threats against North Korea in response to the country’s foreign minister’s fiery speech at the UN on Saturday. Ri Yong-ho described Mr Trump as a “mentally deranged person full of megalomania” on a “suicide mission”. The US president responded by saying Mr Ri and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “won’t be around much longer” if they continue their rhetoric.

Catalonia referendum: Madrid moves to take over local policing
The Spanish authorities have moved to place all policing in Catalonia under central control to stop the disputed independence referendum on 1 October. Col Diego Pérez de los Cobos has been put in charge of Catalan and central police forces in the autonomous region. The order was justified as a way to achieve better co-ordination. But the Catalan authorities rejected it, saying it was an unacceptable interference.

Brazil’s army sent to quell Rio favela violence
The Brazilian army was deployed in one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favelas, Rocinha, after six days of clashes between rival drug gangs. The shanty town is home to an estimated 70,000 people living on hillsides overlooking wealthy western Rio. A major highway running past the shanty town was closed for hours because of a gun battle between the police and criminals that caused traffic jams on one of the city’s main east-west arteries.

Trump calls for BOYCOTTS of NFL teams whose players refuse to stand for the National Anthem
President Donald Trump has ratcheted up the national controversy over black National Football League players who refuse to stand while the U.S. National Anthem is played before games. During a Friday night political rally in Alabama, Trump called on fans to boycott teams that allow players to engage in that particular form of protest.

Germany election: Merkel seeks fourth term
Millions of Germans are casting their votes in the country’s federal elections, with Chancellor Angela Merkel tipped to retain power. She is seeking a fourth term in office and to keep her conservative CDU/CSU alliance’s status as the largest presence in Germany’s Bundestag. Its coalition partner, the social democratic SPD, is its main rival, while the right-wing AfD is likely to gain its first parliamentary seats.

Conservative Roman Catholic theologians accuse pope of spreading heresy
Several dozen tradition-minded Roman Catholic theologians, priests and academics have formally accused Pope Francis of spreading heresy with his 2016 opening to divorced and civilly remarried Catholics. In a 25-page letter delivered to Francis last month and provided Saturday to The Associated Press, the 62 signatories issued a “filial correction” to the pope — a measure they said hadn’t been employed since the 14th century.

Iran launches war games near Iraqi Kurdistan border, Turkey hits militant positions
Iranian forces have launched war games in an area near the border with Iraq’s Kurdistan region, Iran’s state media reported on Sunday, a day before a Kurdish independence referendum in the region. Turkey also said on Sunday its aircraft launched airstrikes against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq’s Gara region on Saturday after spotting militants preparing to attack Turkish military outposts on the border.
